Be joyful though you have considered all the facts…

I’m reminded of Wendell Berry’s beautiful words: Be joyful though you have considered all the facts from his Manifesto: The Mad Farmer Liberation Front.
It’s quite an astounding time.  I know you are all following the news in real time – doing what you can –  marching, making phone calls, writing letters, posting, talking, praying. This past weekend I was in southern VT with some friends and we came across an enormous chalkboard on the side of a building just outside Brattleboro.  I had to share it with you – because in the face of “all the facts” there is still so much to be grateful for. If you look closely at the photo, you’ll see FRIENDS + FAMILY (in blue) – that was my writing and that’s YOU!

A number of the links and ideas below came from you, thank you and keep them coming!

Ideas and Information

Track Trump’s Agenda

Track Cabinet appointments

Re Paul Ryan’s office: If you have a hard time getting through to his number –  call the main switchboard for Congress (202-225-3121) – good number to have on speed dial these days.  When you call you may have a LONG period of silence followed by some beeps (mine was over two minutes this morning – hang in there) and ask for Paul Ryan’s office (you’ll get a real person eventually). This gets you in a loop to hear all about why the ACA must be repealed BUT after you survive that you get to press 1 to support the ACA or 2 to repeal and replace. Calling later in the day or very early may be less frustrating?

If you know anyone traveling to the United States affected by Trump’s Executive Order on immigrants & refugees, please help them reroute their flights THROUGH BOSTON. It is currently the only city that is reliably guaranteed not to DETAIN or DEPORT anyone based on the order because of an order issued by a judge there. (I hope this is changing rapidly)

List of members of Congress who haven’t responded at all to Trump’s refugee ban (they continually update this with statements as they are made and also have links to all statements)

Idea for letters/postcards:
Take my $1.37… I want PBS.
Take my $.46… I am all for federal funding of art programs.
Take my $.46… I love my museums, colleges, and libraries.
Take my $.11… I support developing minority businesses.
Take my $.66… I am for entrepreneurship and innovation.
Take my $1.60… I want us to export more goods overseas.
Take my $0.43… I would like to see more American manufacturing.
Take my $0.88… I think community policing needs vast improvement.
Take my $1.48… I support programs for women.
Take my $1.55… I believe in due process for all.
Take my $0.48… We need a civil rights division in the justice department.
Take my $0.38… I think we need to defend our Mother Earth.
Take my $0.03… I know more work needs to be done for climate change.
Take my $8.95… Because we need more sustainable energy.
Take my $2.71… We should reduce our carbon footprint.

If saving these programs means I’m out $22.36 a year, I’m good with contributing my $.07 a day to save American jobs and these federal programs.

A good friend told me that she’s carrying around the phone numbers/addresses of her representatives – local and federal as well as some pre-stamped postcards to share with people as she meets/engages with them.  A simple thing that keeps us engaged with one another and the issues at hand.

This morning I sent a batch of brownies (my mom’s amazing recipe, happy to share if you’d like it) to Paul Ryan’s letter carrier, Sherrie, with a note saying that I’m guessing that she’s delivering extra mail these days and thought that chocolate might help.  I told her it was my favorite recipe (fudgy not cakey) and that I was sending them along with my gratitude for her extra work.

Inspiration

Really beautiful and moving blog post with reflections from people who participated in one of the marches on January 21st.  Great ideas there for your letter-writing and signs for future marches.

Here’s to you, here’s to us – all in it together!
